Mokri Potok (Vecenbah)….old gottschee village, which history can be traced to year 1498. At that time the village counted 17 houses with a small church in the midle of the village. In the year of 1941 first villagers started to move out. In the end only 4 farms remained. Around 1965 the last villagers left the village and today there can only be seen foundations of a few houses and remainings of the mill.
First ideas of creating ecovillage started around 2008, when the first „pioneers“ decided to check old villages in kočevska region. Surrounded with forest, two creeks (Mokri (Wet creek) and „Veseli“ („Happy“ creek)) and old fruit trees such as apples, pears and some cherries, planted all around the village, Mokri Potok seemed like a perfect location for establishing an eco village.
What gottschee people took from forest in six centuries, the forest reclaimed back in six decades. Was it first victory for human over nature and second victory for nature over human? Maybe! Was it better before than today? It’s hard to say. It is true that forest is growing over old settlements and the world is poorer for a human society. Less crops grow on fields and there is more cattle in the barns. Kočevska, where gottschee people left it, stayed mainly uninhabited, so it became an island in the middle of Europe, where forests abound, where there is enough place for deers, roe deer, wild boar, capercaillie, bear and lynx; cattle, sheep and bees graze on the flowering plains. It probably became one of the biologically richest and diverse concluded sites in Europe.
Kočevska with its special natural, civilizational and historical heritage remains a kind of oasis in the middle of this part of Europe. Oasis, which should remain as it is and to guard against the dangers of aggressive interventions of modern industrialized tourism. We have to protect, restore and celebrate properly all that is possible to maintain the memory of the community of people who for centuries stayed in this beautiful, but for living hard environment of this unspoiled nature. If we succeed, kočevska will again be a found paradise for those who once lost it and everyone else.
